What is the procedure of Aqeeqah? What are its virtues? Which day should it be performed? And how should its meat be distributed?
The mustahab (preferable) manner of Aqeeqah is that it be performed on the seventh day after the birth of the child. If this is not possible than on the fourteenth day, if not performed on the fourteenth also, then the aqeeqah should be performed on the twenty first day. In any case, whenever the aqeeqah is done, one should keep in mind the seventh day. The procedure for this is that the day wherein the child was born, the aqeeqah should be performed a day before that day of birth, for example: if the birth took place on Wednesday, then Tuesday is the day for the aqeeqah and if the birth occurred on Tuesday, then the day for aqeeqah is Monday. If the seventh day is not possible, then the aqeeqah should be observed on whichever day is possible. In the case of a baby boy two goats should be slaughtered and one goat in the birth of a baby girl. The baby’s head should be shaved and sadaqah (charity) of gold or silver should be given to the poor in the weight equal to the hair. Saffron should be applied to the head.
It is preferable to divide the meat into three portions: one portion for family & relatives, another portion for friends and associates and the final portion be distributed to the poor and needy.
By the procedure of aqeeqah, the child is protected from calamities. If the child passes away in childhood then the child will intercede for the parents. By performing aqeeqah the parents fulfill the expressing of thanks to Almighty Allah.
